Title: What is the dress code for a wake?
Post by: Daddy on May 09, 2007, 03:17:11 PM
I don't know what to wear.

This is a serious question.  I don't buy fancy clothes so I don't have much shit.

Black stuff, usually it doesn't matter as long as you don't wear t-shirts with brands on them and maybe something a little nicer then jeans

You don't have much JMV? Oh, and you should probably stick that in serious discussion so you don't get a ton of  jokes.

How about black jeans?

I'm wearing a plain black t-shirt.

That sounds too casual to me...

Dress pants > dockers > nice jeans (dark) > nice jeans (light)

Dress shirt > golf shirt > blank t'shirt (white) > blank t'shirt (black) > blank t'shirt (other colors)

Dress shoes > solid color tennis shoes (black preferable)

That's standard funeral attire.  An actual wake is less formal than a funeral but many people use the term "wake" incorrectly or it has different definitions based on nationality/culture.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the differences in culture.  His parents are from Greece.   They are Eastern-Orthodox.

Okay, I have some Black Jeans.   I have a Black/Blue golf shirt.  Luckily, I do have dress shoes.

You should be fine with that.  I don't know the Greek culture well, but I don't think their wakes are very....lively, as opposed to say, Irish wakes.  I do know that it is sometimes customary for family members to wear solid black for an entire month after the death of a loved one to show their mourning.

Alright.   Tomorrow is the actual funeral.  I'll have to find something to wear then.  It's supposed to be around 80 degrees...

His brother is a strong kid.   He was there the day after Zack died and was able to make people laugh with stories about Zack.  He was in school on Monday.

I don't think I'd be able to do that.

I remember when a kid died in my town, he was a solider in Iraq

Everyone was telling jokes about how he used to fart in class, laughing makes things less sad  caterpie;

Not exactly disrespectful in my opinion since it's remembering him

Who died? emo;
And similar that you'd wear to a funeral, only a little more casual.

My friend Zack.  There is a thread about it in serious discussion.

He crashed last Wednesday night and was taken off life support on Friday.
