Title: Banned books
Post by: NOA_Haunted on October 01, 2007, 01:26:07 PM
I was at the mall the other day and at Barnes & Nobles they had a table labeled "banned books". On this table were books such as the Holy Bible, Hitler's Mein Kampf, Captain Underpants, 2 books I have to read next semester, and a Dr.Seus book. I picked up a WWI book off the table and bought it because I was looking for a WWI/WWII book anyway.

I think thats crazy, come on Dr.Seus for crying out loud!

ITT Discuss what you think about this Banned books thing.

Banned from... what? Barnes and Noble shelves?

Also, what Dr. Seuss book was it? I think one of them could be interpreted as racist or something..

No form of literature should be banned. Even though Mein Kampf is "bad", people still have the right to read it. It's a piece of history.

I mean, I do it when people are trying to force christianity on me, which is... often, but really, what the fuck is the point of bashing what other people believe? All it does is piss other people off.

It's not even that they're being assholes, but they're mindlessly bashing "god" just because the bible was mentioned.

And quite frankly, I think I speak for most people when I say I couldn't give less of a fuck about what god(s) everyone does or does not believe in. Unless someone comes around saying "Oh wow, I love god sooo much, christianity is great, you should all go confess your sins,m be forgiven, and go to heaven." I see no reason why you all need to give your religious standpoints..

We're discussing banned books, and the bible is one of them. It's not banned because it's a fiction title, it's not banned because God is non-existant, it's not banned because people hate christianity; it's banned because for whatever reason, people (like JMV, for instance) can't stand to be around what they don't agree with.

People are gonna do what they want to do and worship what they want to worship, so get over it.  wub;

Actually, the few modern cases involving bans of the Bible were simply ones of not wanting to expose the poor children to the violence and whatnot depicted within.

Just as legitimate a reason for banning any other book, but hey, it's the Bible, so only a heartless atheist would do such a thing.

I'm talking about being banned from Barnes and Noble. here, not any of the other cases (which I'm actually quite unaware of.)

I'm quite sure Barnes and Noble holds books that are more violent than the bible.

And also, I'm not saying 'heartless athiests' are banning it.. I don't think the head of Barnes and Noble one day said "Hey, I don't think god exists, let's get rid of the bible."

I think people of other religions simply deemed it unfair and there were too many complaints and uch.

Yeah, The Lorax was great, it's totally lame that they'd ban it for "strong political content", or whatever their reasoning is. I mean, it's saying that the dude cut down trees, there were no trees left, and all the creatures had no home or whatever (I forget, I haven't read it in 4 years). But that's pretty much what happenes when you use up the land's supply.. there's none left. I don't even understand how that's political.

When has Barnes and Noble banned the Bible? psyduck;

You win, I'm stoopid.
