Title: Will there ever be a laptop HDD larger than 2TB?
Post by: ME## on March 26, 2016, 03:59:52 AM
My PS4 desparetly needs a new hard drive but fucking 2.5" drives are still so overpriced and have such low capacities in comparison to their 3.5" cousins. Won't somebody fix this?

There's a reason why there is nothing cheap and that large.

A 3.5 inch harddrive can add more platters, so a large capacity is possible. The 2.5 inch is too thin and has a much smaller number of platters that can be used. It looks like the highest capacity on a 2.5 inch is 800GB per platter vs 1149GB on a 3.5

Your best bet is to wait for SSD prices to drop, since we're more likely to see cheap high density NAND chips get developed than more R&D placed on improving platter density on a traditional HDD.

yeah i mean you're pretty much Up Shits Creek looking for a high capacity 2.5" HDD, that be unneeded most of the time
