Title: music listening system
Post by: strongbad on January 14, 2013, 10:13:51 PM
just curious how you guys go about listening to music and stuff. it's interesting to hear the different programs and players that people use. also feel free to add why you use anything in particular or if you are looking for something different and why

I use foobar2000 for software. I like that it's super lightweight, customizable (although I haven't really found a theme besides the default one that I liked and I would like to see if anybody else is using anything interesting). I also like that I can use it with last.fm and my sansa clip zip (which i haven't received yet, but I loved how it worked with my sansa clip + when I still had it.

i just ordered a sansa clip zip to replace my phone (and my 3rd gen ipod classic, lol) for my portable device. i loved my clip + and am excited for this one. 4gb with room for my 16gb microsd is ideal for a portable device. i'll probably put rockbox on it since the stock firmware is nothing special (and i can use last.fm with rockbox)

for headphones i have a pair of sennheiser hd595s which i very much like. they aren't great portable use since they're huge and i am worried that they would break or something so i tend to use $20 earbuds from target for exercising or walking around campus and whatnot. i'm in the market for better earbuds (durable, good sound quality, under $50 ideally) if anybody has any suggestions

i also have an ~$80 audiotechnica record player that i like but i don't really listen to enough records for it to be a big deal. the novelty is nice though and it's nice to play records when i have people over.

audio-technica makes good turntables, i'm looking into getting a turntable myself atm and A-T is up there in my likely choices

personally atm i just use my old stereo, which is pretty small, for cds. and my computer with iTunes for digital stuff. grado prestige headphones.

i'd use foobar if they'd make an os x version of it.

i have this one
http://www.amazon.com/Technica-AT-LP60-Automatic-Driven-Turntable/dp/B002GYTPAE/ref=pd_cp_e_0
i don't really know what to compare it to but i really like it. from the research i did it seems like one of the best record players under $200.

I don't have enough space on my hard drive for music so I use Spotify which gets the job done well enough, though I can't fix any tagging errors in the program's database. I have a pair of etymotic hf5 earbuds which sound really nice, given their price range. I live at home still so there's no point in investing in an actual speaker set up at the moment, though I'd really like to get a turntable and start a vinyl collection like ASAP.

Also, the use of Spotify kind of limits my mobile options, and drains the hell out of my phone's batteries, which sucks.

OH WELL, it works well enough for me at the moment.

I just use WMP or spotify (and sometimes Zune) on my computer, and I use my phone a lot now with google play music with just some earbuds or some portable speakers. And sometimes my Zune mp3 player. And I listen to CDs in the car.

Is it all illegally obtained?

Oh, and apparently they added a music matching service for the US not too long ago.

Scans your music collection and automatically adds the songs to your cloud collection without you having to actually upload them to google play music.

Well it does cache the music if you want it too or you can download whatever songs in your collection you want to your phone. There is also a setting to have it stream only in the highest quality (unless that does what you're talking about)

yeah, for some lame reason i haven't really looked into the Stream Only Hioghesht Quality setting doesnt exist in my android app, and the whole point of using it to begin with is that there isn't enough room on my phone : (

i've got a set of speakers near the tv for use with ipods/mp3s/ laptops and such
i use an ipod touch for personal use

the household/roommate record setup consists of 4 sansui speakers with 12 inch subs and 2 fischer speakers with some old 80s sylvania turntable and a pioneer receiver. i know very little of these specifics, but my roommates dad is a huge stoner/record fiend/audiophile from the 60s and he threw it all together. it is way too powerful for this little apartment but i feel so badass for having it

for personal use, maddy and i have an all in one record player with casette, cd, and tape deck!!!!!!! the fancy stuff

why
When I went to the apple store they didn't have any in stock and for some reason wouldn't have any for the next few months, and my grandmother wasn't going to come back in a few months to help me buy it goowan

Though I don't mind it too much, I like the interface of the touch, but I wish it held more music and movies.

i burn cd's and listen to them in my car using a walkman and a cassette tape adapter. At home I usually browse soundcloud and youtube. and i have ultrasone s-logic headphones that close off the world.

I use foobar to listen to music on my computer. If I want to listen to a song which isn't on my computer, I normally just use YouTube and search for the song.

For portable listening, I usually just use my phone.

For earphones, I just use a pair of really cheap JVC ones. I don't bother with getting higher quality ones because I know I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway so there is really no point in spending extra money.

The same goes for headphones, I really can't tell the difference all that much between a high quality pair and a low quality pair, although I can tell the difference slightly better than I can with earphones. I just use some Sony ones which I don't know the model of.

My speaker system is pretty much a cluster of random stuff which I threw together. I have four speakers in total, two small crappy ones and two large crappy ones. The smaller ones are relatively new, the larger ones I think I ripped from an old karaoke system that we used to have. The audio output of my computer is connected to a two way splitter, one of which goes to the old karaoke speakers (the speakers have two audio inputs for some reason) and the other one goes to the smaller speakers. The subwoofer output of the smaller speakers is connected to the second input of the old karaoke speakers so they kind of work as subwoofers (not really), but the sound is more than satisfactory to me, so I don't really feel the need to change any of it. Despite their overall shittiness, they still work pretty well, although it does to this weird thing where it gets louder or quieter depending on where you are positioned in the room.
