Title: how is your job
Post by: strongbad on February 11, 2020, 04:13:19 PM
mine is okay i'm a project coordinator for a fintech company and i basically just make sure that our very large network of web scrapers are working okay and assign work to our developers if they aren't

i almost left the company last year to focus on some contract programming work that i was doing but they convinced me to stay by offering me slightly more money than my remote work and agreeing to "put me on a path to developer." the latter has been not super true and while i have some "developery" tasks here and there (usually data visualization related), i don't feel like i'm where i want to be yet. someone in a similar role to me but for a different product quit recently and all their work got moved to me "temporarily" (my manager told me to not say "it's going well" if people ask how my new responsibilities are going so i don't get stuck lol). nice having various corporate perks, though.

toying with the idea of quitting in like 6 months to do another bike trip and then hitting the interview/pretending-to-be-a-developer grind again

been looking for a job for like a month. i received my AS in computer science but i decided i do not want to program for a living nor do i have any aptitude for programming so i've decided to switch to IT. so now i'm studying for entry level IT certifications (hopefully gonna take my first one in like a month) and applying to entry level IT shit. idk man

IDK I kinda work for the monsanto of weed but I got a raise today and they're talking about making me a lead so I guess it's going ok. I still feel like a sellout tho.

The company has options as one of the benefit,s so if I stay there for 3 more years I get 100k options which could be really cool or not worth shit lol. So my plan rn is to hang on to this job til i get my full vestment and then peace out.

I'm still working for the guberment doing city planning and I'm tired of everyone's incompetence/lack of support for employees that actually do things and think maybe I should try to do something else but idk what. I can't afford to take a paycut to try something new so I feel stuck

mannn i really want to move on
retail life is just...boring lol
recently had a falling out with a supposed best friend thats also my manager (we go way back kinda).  actually something i prob will vent about soon, bc it's been kinda ass.

i want a job that challenges me yet i really dont have shit aside from my AA degree lol
actually i was offered a data entry plan but uhhh lmao im not about that commute life.

man tbh
ive been in a bit of a rut (happens like every 2 months now i lmao) and i feel like im just so limited atm

I literally just wanna draw for a living but lol i can't focus on practicing much.  but whatever im still pushing it whenever I can and when I'm not, I can at least say I think about it all the time- anything that I can apply that's in front of me that I could apply to paper.  Like I'm mentally drawing.  Feels weird bc when I study ppl I realize it could seem like I'm checking them out.  only guys i rly check out are old snow bearded contractors lmao

i also want an art friend tfw
you know, i really need some new friends or maybe catch up with osme old ones idk
i realize im just so...immersed into my own hobbies so much and i only just lurk any forums i visit now

tbh im just kinda sad about...everything.

tfw recently turned down data entry job that was in my grasp
it was good for $14/hr, full time, 8-4pm or 9-5
but the long commute would water that down

alright update on the falling out with best fr
he approached me about casual shit, and we slowly got to talking like it was normal
eventually, I called him out- bc i couldn't just ignore everything like nothing happened when it all stemmed from him scolding at me for something out of my control at work.
turns out there was a huge miscommunication (aside from the scolding)...and that he also expressed some tense/stern vibes, bc personal quarrels
this standoff lasted almost 3 weeks.

now it's like someone opened a fucking window and we're just chill now and updating ever since that shit

i never really say some corny shit
but this guy- although we have so many differences, borderline opposite.  he is kinda like family to me a bit.  but if we didn't straighten out wtf was going on, i'd ditch him straight out though.  he has an aggro demeanor that he just does not know how to control sometimes, and I've been presented with the same behavior multiple times through various people, and I just have no patience for people who don't want to reflect on it when it happens.

good for you man, this stuff is so hard for me since path of least resistance is to just let the friendship die. one time i called out a good friend of mine who being a dick to me for like a month and he thought about it, owned up to it, and then apologized for it. sounds so basic the fact that he actually listened and changed his behavior helped cement him as a one of my best friends.

its aight, i'm finally getting paid decently and once my wife gets a job hopefully, we will be in a pretty solid place and might actually be able to pay off her debt and get a house/condo (ie new debt ayyy) in the next couple years.

that said they laid off one of my good work friends last month and it kind of seems like our operating budget is becoming more and more untenable  awdood;

tho idk maybe thats just nonprofit work in 2020

i mostly just have an unrealistic amount of work that feels like i am constantly drowning and i'm kind of burnt out. its a comfortable gig but i feel like i really need to get out soon so i dont lose my fucking mind but its kinda shitty cuz i know this places web output will go down the shitter once i leave lol also i feel bad for the chump who has to come in after me and digest code i wrote 6 years ago as a fucking idiot kid who didnt know what he was doing lol good luck pal

honestly this wouldn't be that crazy (we seem to be always looking for people in either support positions or things that we can't automate but need to do 10000 of kind of roles)

we are actually looking to backfill my old position (that i'm still doing but trying to get out of) that is actually relatively interesting (still has mundane aspects) and starts at 19-22/hr depending on experience (i started at 22/hr and i bet you could too if you showed basic computer skills and knowledge of how websites work)

the job is also in redmond and not seattle (i commute from seattle but wouldn't recommend it unless you can live right next to a direct bus line or want to spend 2.5 hours/day cycling). cost of living probably wouldn't be as bad as seattle but would still be expensive (probably looking at ~1200/month for a decent 1 bedroom)

DM me here or on facebook if you want to talk more

honestly anyone with half a brain could do an operations associate/specialist/assistant position, and most decently sized companies/orgs in a big city will start you at about $20/hr. those jobs basically just stock paper towels and coffee and call the repair man to fix random shit when needed.
i did it for two years and it was boring as shit but it paid baby

Yep that's how I started at my company. I think staffing agencies/temp agencies are a great way to get jobs like these since companies are usually down to pay for another service to find a decent candidate over doing the dirty work themselves

don't wanna jump the gun, but i'm at least past the interview and onto getting set up for the paid training. next step is making it through the training and being kept on as an employee.

happydood;

it's for a window company, and my job would basically be setting people up for consultations on window replacements/upgrades.

which technically means my job would basically be knocking on doors and getting rejected a lot n_u

but the money could be good (potentially great tbh, the bonuses get pretty huge), it ain't fuckin retail, and dear lord do i need a job rn lmao.

so i hope it works out!!! even if i only do it for a year or so!

also, the dude giving the interview was such a nice, chill, down-to-earth guy who was really interested in my creative endeavors and was very up-front about what exactly the job entails and how basically nobody who starts it knows anything about windows beforehand lol

ool! I used to do that as a summer job. It's definitely awkward knocking on random people's doors at first but you get used to it. Most people were pretty nice to me. Although a few did call the police (we didn't have the permits to canvass lol)  n_u

reminds me a lot about my current job. when my now-manager interviewed me i thought he was legitimately autistic. couldn't hold eye contact with me, was not very excited about the work or the position, pretty awkward

even like a week after working closely with him he is super extroverted, and funny- kind of a michael scott type but still endearing. i think just really bad at interviewing lol

yeah, like the bossman even said that most of the time either people won't even be home, or they'll just politely decline. but i hope i do ok with leads and consultations! the little bonus for getting a lead isn't much, but the bonus for when it actually results in a consultation is much more. he told me that some of the guys doing this actually make a stupidly large amount of money for something so easy. i don't expect to ofc, but i hope to do at least ok. the base $14/hr i'd always get if i never got any leads ever isn't too good lol

Been applying to jobs pretty passively here and there looking for something where I am an actual Software Developer and out of maybe 2 dozen applications (all Indeed ez apply because I'm lazy lol) I've had one phone screen and as of yesterday a take home assignment from another company.

Pretty siked because this is already WAY better than when I was job hunting a year ago (maybe had like 1/50 follow-up success then lol) and I am actually capable of completing this take home project in a satisfactory manner, as opposed to the couple that I've received in the past that were way over my head.

Had a conversation with work on Friday that I think they thought was supposed to go over well.

Essentially they said they could put me on the CAREs act. What that would mean is they would cut my hours and my salary, but I get to claim unemployment. I'd be making more if I did that, cause if you get $1 of unemployment you qualify for the $600 bonus deal through July. I asked them if I would be stuck at this cut salary after July or would is be restored? to which they said "We can't promise anything."

fucking hell man, stop messing with my money. I guess I should take this deal cause I'd be making $600 more than what I would be making, but I'm just worried they're gonna screw me come August.

nd the scenes, yea. But it was down to a team of 4 people. Me, my chef, and two managers in the front. One manager tested positive last week and my chef just texted me saying he feels sick.

i'm still stuck working during the whole shebang.
I'm told im an essential employee but i'm still receiving my normal salary and taking the risk to be there.
especially risky after my gm tested positive for the covid last week.

but yea hi boyah
yikes

you're behind the scenes yeah? not customer facing
nd the scenes, yea. But it was down to a team of 4 people. Me, my chef, and two managers in the front. One manager tested positive last week and my chef just texted me saying he feels sick.

same position my gf was in before she quit. luckily she was able to get unemployement (it seemed less certain for a while there) but regardless it is a fucked situation to be in. hope it works out for you
