Title: DRAGON QUEST IX: Why you should buy it
Post by: KonohaShinobi on July 10, 2010, 08:02:33 PM
So after perusing tons and tons of gameplay video I compiled a list of reasons why you should buy DQIX

1: No random battles, monsters pop up,  you can run torwards them or not
2:When you change armor or weapons, IT SHOWS ON YOUR CHARACTER IN REAL TIME!
3:Story is really good, and there are cutscenes in game, didnt see this in DQV so this is cool
4: When you attack, it's not like old DQ, where its a static screen and your sword slash goes over the enemy, this shit is in 3D, and you MOVE UP AND ATTACK THAT BITCH!
5:Tons of quests and the multiplayer has more depth than pretty much anything out there on the DS.

So yeah, this is looking like the greatest RPG of all time. Or at least on the DS.

Also, DQIX general when the game drops tomorrow

Well, I can't say this thread is all that surprising.  But to point three, you do realise that Dragon Quest V is almost eighteen-years-old, yes?  doodhuh;

I'm like 7 hours in. Its awwwrite. I kind of had hoped the party characters would be people I actually cared about and there wasn't as much emphasis on multiplayer, because who are we kidding no one's going to play this shit with me, but regardless its still pretty funsies.

On that note, this game doesn't have online multiplayer does it? I'm pretty sure its only local, but I havent looked into it, because if its online, maybe we could get something together?

Local only. I don't know what they were thinking.

The lack of online multiplayer really hurts it, especially because the combat is so boring. Or, I assume it is, because I get tired of turn based press A to win battle systems. If it DID have online, I'd most likely get it despite the combat.

Probably that Nintendo's Wifi infrastructure is horrible and wouldn't allow for a co-operative experience that resembles anything remotely fun.

I haven't played Dragon Quest since the Third one on Gameboy Color.

I'm not sure if I should get this or Persona 3 for PSP.  confuseddood;

Okay, so I am only a few hours in, up until following Erin n_n to Stornway.

Everything listed above is true, it's really fun so far.

My character progression:
I used to have the blue bandana, and wore it with pride to match Erin's orange one, but the leather hat has more defense points added. I heard every hat you see on NPCs is findable ingame, pirate hats, lets go!
I am strictly progressing in swordsman and defense/"litheness" for my main character

Also yes multiplayer is strictly local, to access it, you have to be up until the Inn in Stornway with Erin, talk to that angel at the front desk and you can join or host a local game. If you choose to join or host it will just idle the game until identifying a DS's signal nearby with DQIX. Apparently you can trade items and such via this, but it hurts that it is local only. Have to convince some friends to man up and buy it.

this ones different than other ones, you'd understand if you played it. you'd also understand why it doesnt exist if you've ever played online on a nintendo system as well.

persona 3. dont get me wrong dq9 is fun, but persona 3 is pretty damn god tier

ALSO does anyone with a 4 man party notice the level scaling is MUCH different? Like when I was rollin' solo I would level really fucking fast, but now with 4 people we all level really really slowly and at a similar rate.

Somewhat, I would usually reap like 30+ exp just from basic enemies around stornway until I gathered up all the members at the Inn. It seems as though they spread out the exp, I mean, they only get around 9 exp per battle, but they are also leveling up at a ridiculously fast rate, where as my progress is slowed.

 bassir;
Love it. I think I was Japanese in my past life. I'm in love with this game. I'm 10 hours in.
I do admit it's a grind fest. But what's wrong with that? I don't play game JUST for story. I like gameplay. I like watching the fights, and the turns, and the monsters running away in fear.

The story isn't that bad. It's light, and I like interacting with the people, and helping out and stuff.

Does anyone know if the challenge quests will ALWAYS be available, or can you NOT go back later on and finish them all?
And when does the DQVC open? Is there a quest already out?

GO BUY THIS

I am right there with you man, it's funny, after you defeat a monster it seems like every other one nearby runs away. And i like how the bold ones give you a little chase! The battle animations are pretty amazing and varied for a DS game.

Will post more images of my progress soon.

Finished the Wight Knight Quest and training around CoffinsWell and the dungeon.

Is it just me or was Margo and the Wite Knight total pushovers? I got through the boss battles so far pretty easily (Margo at level 10, team was around 8 or 9) and I only healed once and defeated her pretty quickly.

So yeah, grinding is really not AS bad as it is in DQV where you would get raped hard by monsters in a dungeon if you are 1 level less than you should be. Maybe the game gets tougher, idk. maybe anyone further ahead could shed some light on whether or not the boss battles become more difficult or maybe the game is just pacing the player.

Character Progress:

Haven't found where I can change my class yet to something primarily combat instead of Minstrel
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX: Why you should buy it
Post by: metalfaceape on July 15, 2010, 06:41:54 AM
yeah, I'd have to say, minstrel is not the best class. can't wait to change into warrior or gladiator because minstrel has no attack power at all. monsters are walking all over us.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX: Why you should buy it

why are you using minstrel as your main combat character  doodhuh; minstrel should be using support attacks and healing when possible. get a warrior or martial artist for that shit. hell get both.

I'm in Alltrades Alley, switching my main ASAP.

AGAIN: Ragin' Contagion was easy (albeit amusing "RAGIN RAAAAAGIN!!!!!") it was annoying how he attackd twice and lowered defense but we were all too prepared.

Stats so far:
My team is made up of: MArtial Artist lvl 14, Piest lvl 13, and a Mage lvl 13

As soon as i can changing my main to warrior or something combat oriented, as it has been stated, Minstrel has no attack power whatsoever.

I love this game, recently unlocked Ranger, god damn that quest was a bitch, the chimeras kept using Midheal right as the poison was about to kill them. Took about 2 hours to kill 3 of those bastards this way. Switched my mage to the Ranger because I never really used her that much to begin with so, fuck yeah befriending monsters!

Well marionette's boss is kind of a bitch since it attacks twice and it can make multiple characters inactive as well as envenomating multiple characters, so if you have a good healer you should do fine and take care of it pretty easily since it does not have too much HP. My warrior and martial artist were dealing about 80 average and when I tensioned up my martial artist about 300+  so it wasn't too bad.

Also, that boat allows you to get access to a ton of new areas and there's a beach to the east of bloomingdale's continent that has nothing but gold golems which net about 1000 xp for each character, so you can grind there.

Not sure who the dude in the mountain is, there are alot of bosses in mountains. What town is the quest picked up in?

So far none of the bosses have been too troublesome, none of my characters have even hit 30 yet and I am wrecking bosses with ease. Finished swinedimples fygg quest and the boss was not bad, he did that typical double hitting bullshit the rest have done, but if you focus on attacking the bosses go down pretty easily. I have not died during a boss fight but got close to it during swinedimple's, only my martial artist and warrior were left with like 20 HP, martial artist got in a critical in the nick of time, thank god.

Oh and when you do get that boat, head northeast and go to swinedimples, just talk around and gain access to the tomb where the boss dungeon is. The Inn there, you can sleep for free, they give you a bed, and it's still free even after the Inn staff returns, so if you want to rest for free and save anything from 12 to 40 coins, grab that warp point.

Also, if you manage to get your tension to 100, in conjunction with Oomph and the Hand of God skill, you can one hit kill nearly every boss in the game.

THE MOAR YOU KNOW.

Yeah, I'm surprised setting up tension is so easy. It only uses up like 4 turns, and the amount it multiplies the attack power is a little ridiculous. I've been using Egg On and Psyche to tension up my martial artist when the situation calls, only about 35 hours in.

I'm pretty sure Arnamentalist or whatever has a tension upping ability as well, but that class kinda sucks in my opinion, so I haven't dabbled in it that much.  Regardless, the post-game is pretty fucking awesome, I love GROTTO GRINDAN.

Heh, that's all pretty useful, knew about the alchemy guide but not the other two. Editing the front page might as well make it a DQIX discussion thread.

I have been switching my mage to the new classes, unlocking Arnamentalist soon so she'll be exposed, pretty much need my Martial Artist , Warrior, and Priest unless a better healing class shows up.

Sage is a great balance between mage and priest. I recently switched my priest to one, and it still has the ability to heal competently while dealing damage at the same time. Also:
