The point is to clear your mouth of bacteria so that you aren't nourishing them with sugar and carbs and then swallowing them.

i didn't even know eating before brushing was a common thing

I'll do either. If I'm alone I'll probably eat first but if I'm sleeping with someone I'll probably brush first
