life is about mitigating risk without needlessly costing oneself opportunity*

i don't go outside unless i would be costing myself an opportunity in not going outside

Kalahari Inkantation

how i mitigated my risks today:

  • used turn signals when necessary

  • used both rear-view and side-view mirrors to check for obstacles before switching lanes

I've been watching YouTube videos of bikers smashing mirrors and the hypocrisy is especially funny when they're going on about safety while they do it.

the biker is at least as much of a moron as the intersection blocker is lol

He could very well have mitigated his risks by simply not trying to rush through an obviously congested intersection. srsly

>b-but muh right of way!!!!!

yeah

Though the people in the comments brought up the good point that even if the light's green for you, cars still in the intersection have the right of way and you're not supposed to go until the intersection clears.

I figure if he was going to do it he should've at least hugged the right edge and gone behind the cars in the intersection and in front of the ones stopped by the light.

lol so not only was he bad at calculating risk, he was just flat-out wrong

in any case, regardless of who has the right of way, traffic isn't always predictable and thus one can't expect that the right-of-way principle will always be respected

the safest thing he could have done was simply sit and wait and not play chicken by speeding through a crowded intersection

now this would have been properly calculated risk that maximizes benefits (progressing forward) while minimizing costs (collision)

unfortunately, risk management is a skill that's quite difficult to develop lol

other fun and practical ways of mitigating risks:

  • always know what you're putting in your mouth

  • glance at the ingredients and nutritional info for that thing you're about to eat, do some basic research on ingredients you don't recognize

  • know the intended effects and potential side effects of whatever drug you happen to be taking, and be aware of any interactions
