The only movie I know from Goro is Tales from Earthsea, which I heard wasn't too good. This looks pretty solid though. happydood;

at least with arietty, you have to realize that ghibli/miyazaki didnt write it. its an adaptaion, so imo it cant be as good as his other movies. same goes for Ponyo

that doesn't mean that ghibli, and specifically miyazaki, didn't write the screenplays. which he did. for both ponyo and arietty (although i think he partnered with someone for arietty's screenplay). so even if it is an adaptation, there's still a lot of creative control for the screenwriter, and they don't have to adapt it any particular way. you can't really say that it has to be worse "because he didn't write it" or "because it's an adaptation."

besides, most animes and films are adaptations of some sort. hell, most of ghibli's works are. here are some better ghibli films, some of which were directed or screenwritten by miyazaki, which are adaptations:

grave of the fireflies
kiki's delivery service
whisper of the heart

Princess Mononoke is their best

also eh, I saw earthsea and fell alseep through it. didn't bother with arietty and wont bother with this

yeah the pacing was pretty weird on that movie. i need to watch it again though
Spirited Away is the best, Princess Mononoke is 2nd
then again I haven't seen every Ghibli film

spirited away is my personal favorite, with castle in the sky and mononoke basically tied for second
