In my opinion they should've gotten rid of Ash

Pokemon Adventures (the manga) uses new protagonists based on each game's player characters with each new subseries and that's one of the main factors that makes it so much more interesting than the anime.

It also helps that every single one of those characters has more personality than Ash. And that there's actual plot.

Actually, no, only one of the Pokedex Holders (protagonists) in Adventures shows any intention to catch them all: Crystal. She of course doesn't appear much after the Johto arc.

the plot is mostly bad guys doing bad things

In the anime too, Ash doesn't pay much attention to the "gotta catch 'em all" catchphrase either and has an absolutely pathetic pokedex owned list. For him, it's mostly "gotta meet and befriend 'em all"
