I actually like Google+ Hangouts much more than any other video chat system I've seen or tried.

it wasn't working on THREE different browsers

safari, firefox, firefox

in each of them, cams wouldn't load and i'd get kicked out and given an error

i uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin

still nothing

google is ass

Maybe the plugin probably doesn't properly support (wasn't tested in) your version of OS X

I imagine hangouts use a comparable amount of bandwidth to livestream so they shouldn't die that bad on a connection that can successfully watch streams

Well you can do a group video call but I think you need Skype's premium service.
