art's fine although i do think shitty art exists

art majors are worthless because college is not only supposed to teach you skills but teach you how to continue learning, which is why science degrees are extremely valuable. what the fuck does an art major hope to accomplish during their time there or after

seriously name 5 good artists who majored in art. pretty much every major scientist in the past century or two went to college and actually got something out of it and continued their research there while good artists are random people with talent or something important to say

I had a manager several years ago say that art school is nice in that it will teach you to "get into a routine" with your art, like making is a habit to sit down and do it. But then again if you have to practice sitting down and doing it instead of doing it out of sheer "enjoyment", you should maybe rethink what you're doing.

also what art do you enjoy and what do you think is shitty.

whatever this dumbass makes and anything like it is shit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_Pollock

if it requires some degree of thought or emotion, then i have a little more respect for the work. it doesn't necessarily mean i'll like it, but it's still art. when you're flinging paint on a canvas and selling it for millions, then the only art you've mastered is conning idiots
Video games are art.
Pollack seems to be a dividing line for many. I think I appreciate it because I think of art (at the risk of sounding incredibly pretentious) as a kind of communication. Sometimes you can't use words or sounds to convey what's going on in you, so you have to draw things or create something to channel whatever's plaguing you. Pollack was a deep alcoholic and some speculate that he had bipolar disorder. Each piece is kind of an explosion of whatever was going on in his head. though his earlier work has more discernible figures in it. Also I'm not sure he actually made millions off of his paintings during his lifetime. I can understand the disdain for his work though.

this is a cool pollack piece imo
also i agree wholeheartedly
QuoteAt age 16, Picasso set off for the first time on his own, but he disliked formal instruction and quit attending classes soon after enrollment.
On Sun Ra:
QuoteHe was a music education major, studying composition, orchestration, and music theory, but after a year, he dropped out.

i guess dali graduated but the majority of big artists dropped out, had a non-arts major, or didn't go at all
