if you constantly joke about yourself, people will get annoyed because it feels like you're always trying to bring them down or receive some sort of pity. i know from firsthand experience

if you can joke about yourself occasionally, then it shows you're not too damn arrogant, but if you go out of your way to pretend you're dumber than average around others, then nobody wants to be around you because you're just depressing
