I didn't figure it was an insult, but  I probably wouldn't ever post anything like that outside of the chat thread, unless it was something completely amazing and I actually had something worthwhile to post about it.

Please. If you actually paid attention to the chat thread, you'd notice that a great deal of the posts in there are things that don't fit anywhere else. Idle conversation between two people that would get locked otherwise and they'd get told to "take it to PMs." Simple greetings and postings of random internet findings with no real expectation for discussion.

The thread's there for a reason.

getting off-topic isn't really a reason we lock these days, at least not often

but making a thread where you just post a picture you found on tumblr would get locked, yes. hint hint.

But my point is that they do get pretty "chatty" and basically get turned into little chat threads of their own.

i'm aware. and my point is that there's material posted to the chat thread that doesn't belong elsewhere. that's the way it is.

if you are concerned with the basic notions of a "thread," then i suggest that maybe a forum just isn't for you

I know that. If the chat thread was ever killed it would kill a lot of posting. The chat thread archive has almost as much posts as just the lobby board has. The lobby would almost have a million posts if those threads were still here.

But also I was pointing out that those "chatty" threads don't generally get locked like you were initially trying to say.
