Yeah, I was personally really torn between the river route and one of the Rochester routes, but now I am 100% for the river route and in full agreement with the alternatives analysis' executive summary's decision for a number if reasons:

--the fastest Rochester route is only 4:27, whereas the river route is 4:35, merely 8 minutes longer. I had expected the difference to be much larger (and I think most people did) considering the hoopla everyone was throwing about the 95 curves or whatever.

--the current situation in congress (Oberstar being gone, republican legistlature, and the recent cuts on the Amtrak bill) mean that we're likely looking at a very incremental approach and I am glad they are recognizing that rather than pursuing a complete route change that would never get funded in the forseeable future.

It will be interesting to see how Wisconsin reacts to the report. I'm guessing they will demand a Madison reroute, but hopefully MHSRI, Mn/DOT, and the FRA will be able to stick the additional expense on them.
