I bought my own PS3 in May for $200, but just this fall I paid an extra $100 total for LBP2, a second controller, and a Ratchet game (not the same game, but included with my controller's bundle), which is practically the same value as the bonuses in that bundle.

If you consider being able to play Gamecube games half of the regular Wii's functionality, then this family edition one has less than half because of incompatibility with GCN controllers for use in games like Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, and Virtual Console.

Even if it's for my sister rather than myself, I'd rather pay an extra $50 for the regular Wii. Oh, and the regular Wii at its ~$150 price point seems to include either Wii Sports Resort or Mario Kart Wii as a bonus, so I wouldn't even be saving (much) money in the end on the family edition considering I know my sister likes both games.

Actually, no. Wii is completely incapable of obtaining and using anything remotely close to the size of a Gamecube game.

What I was saying is that they are going to slowly phase out the gcn, and probably make their games dlc on the wii u.

It's not necessarily releasing in April; could be any time between then and holiday season 2012, more likely to be closer to the latter, especially considering that we only have like one announced game for it with Pikmin 3

and yes, it's because Wii U has plenty of drawbacks (mostly shared with Wii Family Edition ) for playing Wii games and lacking GCN compatibility. And it'll be more expensive than it's worth for quite a while after launch.
