I love them. Every so often I have enough effort to craft a masterful playlist with every song and its placement hand-picked, but then it's a hassle to update them with new music.

My favorite formula is

Genre contains [any one genre]
Rating is 5 stars (I only use star ratings to give things 5 stars to facilitate smart playlists)
Last Played is in the last 4 months

Say I did it for hip-hop, it creates a nice (and huge) playlist that automatically adds all my favorites of hip-hop I've listened to in the last few months. Put it on shuffle and it's instant party shuffle for a specific genre except better.

The only one that I ever use is for music with 0 plays, so I can give everything that I download a listen. Otherwise I just make the playlists myself.

That's a good idea, I usually just use Recently Added though

The artist formally known

I wish play counts and last listen to were like stored in an account that you could use throughout different computers.

What program are you using.

iTunes can just use library files for it.

Also, I use:

Andria

I have them for genres, artists, and date added

Feynman

I use them to share my iTunes library with my sisters.

I share everything besides Eminem, for obvious reasons.

YPrrrr

I never even figured out how to make them doodhuh;

The Hand That Fisted Everyone

I use them to figure out how many songs I have by a particular artist.

I have about 300 r.e.m. songs
190-ish Depeche Mode songs
300 by David Byrne/Talking Heads
and 99 by Radiohead.

107 by TMBG.

Of course, alternatively, you could just type in a band's name in the search bar to narrow your entire list down to that band if you need to see how many you have. You don't need to make a playlist.
