I scrounged used lots (and dealt with the mugs who run them) for ages until I resorted to solely  looking in local classifieds.
I found my car on the side of the road for $1200 being sold by an older couple who only drove it in the summer. Only 70k miles on it and not a single touch of rust. Plus, he had just replaced the transmission and reworked some of the belts.
I've had it three years now and the only problems I've had was a blown tire and a funky thermostat.

Yeah, I've taken that into consideration. That's why I'm trying to stay under $1000, which is making this near impossible.

yeah any decent car being sold under $1000 either has serious body issues or a lot of problems or like 750k miles

UPDATE:
My dad will pay for half if I get a pick-up truck.
Even though I'll look like a driving a truck, I'll also look like a driving a $1000 car, so I think that the trade-off is worth it.

Time to get a truck.

I'm about to go drive 50 miles to look at this. If this guy is legit, the only thing wrong with it is a cracked windshield. Wish me luck guys
