Symbolism for the people.  The US of A is a religious country, and Mark Twain never liked the church, so to represent his disdain for both the people's opinion on the war and the church, he holds the story within one.

I'm actually calling myself a lunatic.

The idea I'm trying to get by is that you should be careful about what you wish for.  If you actually do get your wish, negative consequences follow, such as your loved ones despairing over your death.

You can never be too sure.

The few that you think would care might create a ripple effect, negatively affecting the rest of the world because of something you haven't really considered.  In my opinion, the prospering of the world -- whether I directly help of not -- is the most important thing, so I would be pretty fucking pissed if I knew my actions upset the world.
