I was thinking homosexuality at first, but the way it's explained it sounds more like something they do in some denominations but not in theirs.

I was thinking homosexuality too..

He was dressed nice and was serving tea and cake.. Plus he referred to soccer as "footy," and the parents were ashamed of him.  Also the instruction manual said his lifestyle wasn't really wrong.

Plus if it was just a denomination difference, wouldn't the parents just say he had a different instruction manual like the friend rather than just being ashamed?  huhdoodame;

I think it means he used the same instruction manual but interpreted it differently.

The kid said that his said there was more or something and his parents got mad.

but yeah it really doesnt symbolize anything, not even specific religions, just promoting free thought.
