I'm going to reformat, does the computer ask to create a new partition for the new OS? I kind of have lots of stuff I need to save. Thanks

You can create the new partition when you reinstall.

When you're installing a new OS, the install dialogue will prompt you for reformatting options, like whether you'd like to create a new partition, reformat the drive, or install on an existing partition.

Backup your shit now, and upon installation of the OS, you may reformat.
