Well since you are going to wipe the HDD that means all partitions are going away. Maybe you'll be able to resize it later. Also, what kind of partition was it?

btw If you're going to dual boot XP and Ubuntu you should install XP first, it's a lot easier. Oh and I heard of something called http://NTFS-3G dunno if it'll help. http://www.ntfs-3g.org/

You can download that off of Ubuntu's repository if I remember right.

There was originally a windows partition saved and I think whatever my dad did caused the problem.

Yeah, NTFS should be fine.

Perhaps GParted can't see the NFTS partition.

Try partition magic in Windows XP, or the GParted boot CD.
