My dog is also old. He is fifteen and has a skin illness. I feel so bad for him, his sickness puts him through a lot of pain everyday, it's gotten to the point where his skin is molting and he has no hair in the areas. I want to put him to sleep but it would hurt my family and I too much.

If you were a farmer and needed a dog for your daily operations, or for security then yes, you have a reason. However living in a metropolitan area there really is absolutely no necessity for a pet.
