I'm 30% into it and I have no idea what is going on and the only common themes are gay eroticism and torture

you guys ever read any flannery oconnor? i had to read a bunch of her short stories some years ago and i was struck by how particular and lively her characters are, in connection with these heavy themes and twisting plots that all seems to take place in ruralesque America 40s-60s. i was recently drawn to her peacock emblazoned book down in my basement and realized that i missed these gems. it has since moved to my bedside commode, yes, a fucking commode.

i don't know why she and her work does not get as much recognition as other great american writers and short stories. i mean the misfit, a good man is hard to find, and the life you save may be your own, to name a few, are just as good as anything o henry, poe, fitzgerald or salinger ever wrote.

highly recommend checking her out.

Finished Valis
Very good! Thanks for the recommendation everyone!

I struggled to get through maybe like the first half of it because it seemed so nonsensical at times but I really like the direction it took. Everything was so well done and well written.

Think I'm gonna tackle Dune next

About 100 pages into Dune and I'm really digging it. I tried a few years back and couldn't get into it but it is really striking a cord right now. Glad I'm giving it another shot :)

yeah im stoked about how many i have to read after this first one
do you have a recommended order?

silvertone

they're in chronological order so read em as they were published. the first book is by far the best one. but the last book is probably second best, so it's worth your time to read em all.

i havent read anything the son wrote because fuck HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
