These days, it's mostly just tradition and a bit of a joke. I guess it used to be necessary to have a way to express lust in manga, so that's what they went with...but still, why nosebleeds? I don't really know.

The closest I ever gotten a nose bleed is when air in my nose feels like its burning it. :(
