You know, I've actually been wondering about that recently. In elementary, I was always taught to put two spaces after periods and colons, but these days, it doesn't seem to matter. I've never encountered any English instructor in high school or, so far, college, that wants to see those double spaces. There's also no application on computers that autocorrects to make double spaces.

I always do.  Two spaces after periods, one after a comma.

It seems that as time passed it became less important.   It's just a habit I have from writing up until High School, when it suddenly didn't matter.   

It's just hard to break a habit that you've used for as long as you've been able to write.  There are a few posts I've made where I don't double space, but usually I end up double spacing.  I also realized that I have the habit of putting a space after the last period in a paragraph.

I never had to in school

I always used single space... but older people like my parents tend to use the double.

JMV, sometimes it's 3, and sometimes even 4. Then you for some reason hit enter twice at the end of paragraphs. I don't mind the two spaces rule but your formatting must be really fucked up if you're not doing it on purpose. Fix it, it's pissing me off.

I've never made 3 or 4 spaces after a sentence. 

Hitting enter at the end of a paragraph is normal.  I'll post an example.

"Hello, I am Batman and I will fucking rape you.   Fear me.  I am the night dkfdkfdkjdlkfdld.  Words words words.   More words.   Longer paragraph.

This is another paragraph.   This is the second sentence in the paragraph.   Cool, I have made yet another sentence."

Looks better than:

"Hello, I am Batman and I will fucking rape you.   Fear me.  I am the night dkfdkfdkjdlkfdld.  Words words words.   More words.   Longer paragraph.

Doing the latter creates a wall of text.
