I am probably one of the few who think that melody is more important than speed.

There's a lot of elements to being a good guitarists, and speed is certainly necessary, but speed should be focusing on quick chord-changing and stuff like that, not picking as fast as you can. There's times that call for it, though, I guess.

Yeah, I have a friend who does both covers and writes his own material. He also recently started doing vocals too. He's pretty good.
