My grandpa was a POW in Russia when he was 12.

Him and his 2 friends went up to a guard and asked if he would like it if his son was home for christmas, and so the guard  told them he'd let them run, but if the other guards started shooting he'd shoot too. So they ran, and obviously they didn't get shot.

he went across russia in the middle of the winter and came to America.
