last finished: SOMA

as much of a soyboyp*ssy as i may be i'm definitely glad i managed to force myself through to the end, it certainly has a highly engaging, extremely well-executed, uniquely grim plot lol

spoils follow be warned god fuck; where's the spoiler function it's been months
it is legitimately terrifying, i spent a significant amount of my soma playtime staring at the pause menu psyching myself up to face whatever new horror i could see approaching me down a narrow hallway or hear making freaky noises around the corner

frightening as they may be, however, some enemy encounters are also quite annoying for a couple of reasons

it feels as if every new enemy is behaviorally unique and requires a particular strategy for evading it, but in most cases the game doesn't so much as hint to the player what that strategy might be

catherine (my wife) tells you during one of the earlier encounters that the monster will leave you alone if you keep your distance and avert your gaze, but it turns out this isn't universally true, there were some enemies that seemed to pursue you regardless of your distance from them, some that didn't appear to care at all whether you looked in their direction, some that you actually could slowly approach without aggroing them, some that could sense noise, some that seem light-sensitive, some that could even open doors, etc., and so every time you encounter a new enemy you're completely clueless as to how to escape it

i didn't exactly want to spend any time closely studying the behaviors of creatures that were designed to terrify, so most of the time, if just sneaking by them or hiding in dark corners didn't seem to be effective, i just brute forced it and ran through to the next area until they stopped following lol

furthermore, some of them limit your ability to thoroughly explore an area without feeling rushed

this is especially true of the other power suit freakazoid in tau, there were a number of rooms probably full of snippets of plot that i just flew right by in my frantic effort to keep away from him lol jesus christ >.<

also this must have been a glitch but whatever-the- fuck; was chasing me near the end after getting past the WAU grabbed me but never let go lol, after two minutes of listening to simon yelping and getting whipped around i had no choice but to restart the game

the gameplay is pretty shallow but inoffensive, it's obviously a tool to advance the plot more than anything else, but the plot is interesting and well-told enough in itself that i don't really mind, though there were definitely times where i would have loved to have a shotgun lol >.<
also, excellent sound design

overall 8/10

Smash 4 is already dead to me but if you're gonna get Ultimate I am 100% down to be enraged by your duck hunt

Kalahari Inkantation

finished twd season 2 and as there's not much to say about the gameplay of an interactive visual novel all i can really comment on is its writing, which i can sum up in two points

>sarah dies and literally nobody cares
>11 year old girl takes a gunshot two inches from the heart and just walks it off within minutes

i mean just lol

it got off to a decent start, but every new character is less developed than the last and deaths are now becoming so cheap and meaningless that the story of twd is becoming more of a comedy than a tragedy

the only likable character left is clementine, and even she falls victim to weak writing as the season ends

the reviews for season 3 and beyond suggest that the series continues to limp along in mediocrity like this, but i've invested enough time into it now that i'd still be willing to play the remaining 1.5 seasons for no more than like $5 i guess

anyway, rdr undead nightmare next

Kalahari Inkantation

last purchased:

this month's humble bundle, overwhelmingly for hollow night but also for hitman 2k16 which is supposedly not terrible

steam currently has hollow night alone for $10, the bundle includes it and hitman for $12, so may as well spend the extra $2 for the bundle i guess

Kalahari Inkantation

last finished: rdr undead nightmare

it was great why hadn't i played it sooner

it's basically rdr distilled to only the most fun parts lol, and because it's not bound to reality like the base game is it gets pretty creative with wacky weapons and mounts which adds to the fun

playing this was an unfortunate reminder that on foot, marston has all the grace of a 400lb permadrunkard which makes entering buildings and navigating narrow hallways to find a bed for save/warp purposes insanely annoying, i do wish it were possible to save/warp from anywhere especially for that reason

but that's probably my only real complaint

9/10

Nyerp

played the demo for tetris effect and WOW i'm bad at tetris

 • resident evil revelations
 • destiny 2
