Unfortunately most of the items are useless for 90% of the game. Did you know there's a boomerang in this game? Why? Sand rod? Tornado rod? Fire rod? Ice rod? They help you get maybe one or two alien babies outside of their intended dungeon and that's it. I barely even used my bow in this game. Pretty much the whole game is built around hitting shit with your sword, plus the occasional "aw shit I forgot to grab the hookshot so this guy's gonna be a pain" enemy. You have every item available to you from the beginning. Build some overworld puzzles around that. Theme entire sections around certain items. There's no excuse not to. There's so much wasted potential here it honestly upsets me. This is what they needed to do to make it feel like its own game.

unfortunately this problem seems to have become hereditary in zelda, but yeah, it's particularly pronounced in albw because even essential series mainstays like the boomerang and bow are notably underutilized

i'm assuming the developers reduced the occurrence of special item-dependent puzzles because they couldn't exactly predict when you'd have any given item due to the more open design of the game, but like you said, you can buy/rent any item at any time anyway, so it shouldn't have been a problem

if anything, this game could have had an ever greater variety of special item puzzles than is typical of zelda precisely because you have access to everything at once

I get that they're trying to pay homage to the original game, but I'd rather feel like I'm having a whole new experience rather than a soft remake.

this is easily my #1 complaint about albw

it does disappointingly little to expound upon or otherwise differentiate itself from the world of alttp, rather it just 3difies and tweaks it, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse

albw essentially rides alttp's coattails to success, and as a consequence it only barely has its own identity at all, and still alttp remains the superior game anyway

also i think it's generally agreed upon that zelda has been getting easier on average, but it is also true that you are older and by now probably know all of the typical zelda tricks that would have been novel to you 15 years ago lol

general player familiarity is not a good excuse for the game being easy though

Quote from: Detective Spatchcock on August 16, 2018, 03:35:36 PMSPOILERS: HIGHLIGHT TO READ:
Hilda being evil was telegraphed so hard that I kind of rolled my eyes when it happened. Her motivations were actually great though, and that surprised me. I can't remember if there has been another truly sympathetic villain in a Zelda game. Ravio being the Lorule version of Link fucking blindsided me and I loved it. He's a bunny! It's right there!

spoilers: i like that they finally addressed what the purpose of the triforce is beyond causing war and chaos, and i admire hilda for having been brave enough to destroy the stupid thing to put an end to the suffering it had caused lorule even if in the end it didn't quite work out as anticipated

But I also think she got off way too easy. Isn't it just a little too convenient that a Triforce can be used to simply will another Triforce into existence? SocksDood;

the game's conclusion just seems way too tidy and consequence-free for that reason lol, a wish like that should be a monkey's paw

anyway i think 8/10 is a fair score for the game, but it's good mostly because it's alttp with some twists

the premise of assassin's creed is legitimately pretty great and the games themselves aren't bad when they aren't bad

it's just that there's an abundance of mediocre ac titles that drag the series average down lol

there should only be like 5 ac games by now at max, instead we're approaching number 11, and that's not even including the endless spinoffs

she really is the only choice lol

etely agree. And if they had just gotten rid of the modern animus plotline it would probably be legitimately one of my favorite game series of all time.

Although Ive only really played significant chunks of 2, 4, and Origins.

1 and 3 were kind of boring and I didn't have much interest in England or France (or any of the offshoot games)

Kalahari Inkantation

full disclosure i've still only played ac 1 lol sillydood;

and that game is certainly rough around the edges but i could still see/feel its potential

my plan: play 2, brotherhood, 3, black flag, origins, and comfortably ignore all the others y/n

and well odyssey if it scores 84+ on metacritic i guess lol

YPrrrr

Oh lol I thought 1 was really boring but if you enjoyed it at all almost every other game in the series will seem incredible by comparison
