i'll just copypaste what i said about it on my tumblr:

well, i finished Portrait of Ruin. great game, but it’s got more issues than most Metroidvanias.

like, the co-op gameplay is great, but the AI can be spotty and puzzle solving with it can be awkward. the level design seems a little lacking compared to the rest of the games, and in particular i wasn’t fond of the two weird circular levels where the orientation of the world keeps changing and goofy funhouse music plays in the background. and no other castlevania feels the need to repeat level designs like this either. didn’t need two funhouse levels, two egyptian levels, etc. order of ecclesia did a much better job with the whole “metroidvania with separate small areas instead of one big castle” setup.

other than these complaints, this one’s got the same fantastic gameplay, beautiful artwork and cool tunes as the rest of the metroidvanias.

so far, my list goes symphony > aria > dawn > ecclesia > portrait = circle. something like that. as far as i can recall, the only one of this style i haven’t played yet is harmony of dissonance. which i do have, idk when i’ll get to it though.

It's impressive in its own way that Portrait's character art manages to be even worse than Dawn's
