No, you're right about the puzzle and everything, but for some reason all you have to do is shoot the wine glass. The rest of the "puzzle," what with all the signs that seem to spell out an order, are probably just to confuse people. The only sign that tells the truth about the puzzle is the one about the wine glass breaking.

I recently got to try a DMC game for the first time on my friend's PS2. It was DMC2, and it was pretty damn fun. I should get those sometime once I have a PS2.

just don't get any other gta games before sa. if you don't like sa, you certainly won't like 3 or vc. if you do like sa, you'll be spoiled and will probably be unable to like the other games because sa is just perfect.
